LUMARE was Invited to Speak at B20 Side Event 2022 in Surabaya

B20 theme under Indonesia’s presidency in 2022 was a call for the global ecosystems to RECOVER TOGETHER, RECOVER STRONGER. Vice Chairwoman of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shinta Kamdani mentioned, “B20 Indonesia is committed to bringing together G20 business communities under one accord to recover stronger towards an inclusive, resilient, and collaborative global economic growth.”

The purpose of this event was to develop ideas further, along with the best practices that have been carried out in B20 member countries and the adoption of various policy support from G20 member countries. The B20 side event on GVC took place in East Java as a forum for discussion and best practice sharing from various nodes in GVC, both in Indonesia and globally from 15-17 September 2022.

In light of this, the B20 Side Event in East Java gave particular attention to the issue of Global Value Chain participation of fast-growing corporations/SMEs - where in most economies, growth-stage businesses account for more than 95% of the total number of firms and comprise more than 70% and 50% in terms of employment and value-added, respectively.

The plenary, fireside chats, and business forum roundtables were held both offline and through online platforms. The sessions featured speakers from industry thought leaders, government or policymakers, and representatives of international institutions that focus on the B20 agenda in various global value chain issues, to share views and policy recommendations.

Nadia Febina, the founder of LUMARE, was also participating as one of the panellists at the fireside chats events on 15 September 2022, with the theme “Green Future & Energy Value Chain.” In this event, Nadia shared about ocean thermal energy (OTEC) and its vast potential in Indonesia. Other panellists also include Imelda Harsono Vice President of Samator Group, Elisabeth Tinschert from GIZ Energy Programme Indonesia/ASEAN, and Anthony Utomo Vice Chairman of Indonesian Solar Energy Association (Asosiasi Energi Surya Indonesia), who are green leaders and well-established industry players in the Indonesian renewable scene as private sectors.

Some of the takeaways from the session were the importance for the government to look at taxes and incentives for the private sector. There was also insight into making energy value chains work for the energy transition in the global south. Also discussed in the session was the aspiration to have Indonesia decrease its dependencies on fossil fuels by using all the renewable options that have potential in Indonesia, including ones that are rarely looked at: ocean energy.

The insights from all the sessions in the event were included as part of the B20 insight formulation for the upcoming B20 summit in Bali in November 2022.
