Nadia Febina Spoke at UNFCCC UN Climate Change 2021

Founder of LUMARE Energi, Nadia Febina was invited to speak as one of the 4 panellists in a session on ocean energy in Asia Pacific Climate Week (APCW 2021) organised by UNFCCC UN Climate Change.

Nadia’s involvement in ocean energy was quite recent, but her interest in it had been brewing over time. It first started on a scuba diving trip in 2009 on a remote island in Indonesia. While sitting on a beautiful pristine beach, all of a sudden she heard a noise and smelled diesel from the diesel generator that powers the small and modest accommodations on that little island. It was quite distracting and she thought, there must be a better way to do this. She was still working in Angola on an oil project at that time, but after that diving trip experience, out of curiosity, she started to casually read and research on the side about clean energy technologies, esp. those that are suited for the island environment. She then found references and literature about ocean thermal energy (better known as ocean thermal energy conversion or OTEC) and she was hooked.

Long story short, after a few years, she took on a more formal approach to studying it by finishing her master’s degree thesis on the subject. After quitting her 15-year oil & gas job and with encouragement and support from mentors, colleagues and relatives, LUMARE Energi was founded in mid-2019. It has been a thrilling and arduous journey indeed. Until today the learning still continues every single day for Nadia and Lumare.
